Where to stay
Your hotel decides more of your trip than anything else you book. It sets how far you walk, whether you need a car, what's open near you at 8pm, and how badly a nap derails the afternoon.

Why Booking.com
Two reasons, both practical. It has the deepest coverage of family rooms and apartments outside the big chains — which is most of what you want in southern Europe. And it's the only major site where you enter your children's ages up front, so the prices you see already include them. On sites that don't ask, you find out at the property that a "double room" sleeps two people and your 7-year-old costs extra.
Its reviews are also only from people who actually stayed, because you can't review without a booking. That doesn't make them unbiased, but it removes the worst category of fake.
The filters that actually matter
- Enter the kids' ages, not "2 adults". Half the family rooms in a city won't show up otherwise, and the ones that do will be priced wrong.
- Free cancellation until a week before. It usually costs 10–15% more and it is worth it on the first booking of a trip, because plans move. You can always rebook non-refundable later once the dates are certain.
- Review score 8.0+ with 100+ reviews. A 9.6 from eleven reviews is noise. Below 8.0 in a tourist city there is always a reason, and it is usually noise of the other kind.
- Air conditioning, if you're anywhere Mediterranean between June and September. It is not a given in older apartments and it decides whether anyone sleeps.
- "Apartments" as the property type if your kids are small. A separate bedroom means the adults get an evening instead of sitting in the dark from 8pm.
The neighbourhood question
This is the one people get wrong, and it's the one Sunnoro is most useful for. The cheapest acceptable hotel is often 25 minutes outside the centre, which looks fine on a map and costs you an hour a day, every day, usually with someone complaining. Over a week that's most of a day of your holiday spent in transit, to save perhaps €200.
Before you book, open the map view and check three things: how far it is to a supermarket, whether there's a playground or park within ten minutes, and what the walk back looks like after dark. If you're planning with Sunnoro, ask it "is this a good area to stay in with a 4-year-old?" and paste the address — it'll tell you what's within walking distance and whether you'd need a car.
Mistakes that cost you a day
Booking somewhere with stairs and no lift. Fourth floor, no lift, two suitcases and a pushchair is a genuinely bad start. The listing will mention it, in small text, near the bottom.
Ignoring the check-in window. Many apartments have a hard window — 3pm to 7pm, say — and a late flight means a key handover negotiation in a language you don't speak. Hotels don't have this problem, which is sometimes worth the extra money.
Assuming breakfast is included. For a family of four it's €40–60 a day, and in most Mediterranean cities the café on the corner is better and a third of the price.
Booking the whole trip non-refundable to save 12%. One sick child and you've lost the lot.
